Celebrity Makeup and Skincare: The Domination of the Entertainment Industry

Thanks to the rise of social media and convenient streaming services, it is undeniable that the influence of celebrities has grown exponentially in recent years. From yummy recipes to effective workouts, more and more people are turning to celebrities for advice on how to live their lives. Recognizing this, many of them have expanded their brands to profit from their extended influence, particularly the beauty industry. 

Many swear by celebrity skincare and makeup brands as pillars of beauty and air-brushed perfection. From Fenty Beauty (Rihanna) to Rare Beauty (Selena Gomez) to Haus Labs (Lady Gaga), these brands have quickly taken over the shelves of Sephora and Ulta, experiencing a growth rate of over 58% and surpassing $1 billion in sales in 2023 alone. This is especially impressive considering the beauty industry as a whole experienced only 11.1% growth in that same year. However, many critics note that, “celebrity makeup brands often mark up the prices because they have a famous name attached to the product” and their success makes the market competition difficult for non-celebrity brands to thrive. 

The influence of celebrities and influencers in the beauty industry is simply undeniable in today’s day and age. However, when purchasing from them, it is vital to consider whether the product is an innovative step forward in the beauty industry and if it is worth the price.
